As a devotee of acupuncture, who has used this ancient Eastern art to ease back pain as well as severe tendonitis in my knees, I know the benefits of thinking out side the box.

So when our new horse, Scarlett, started showing signs that her "cinchiness" was turning into full-blown attitude, along the lines of I'm-going-to-eat-you-if-you-put-that-saddle-on-my-back, I knew I was dealing with something more than a horse that didn't like the girth tightened.

But when I started thinking about alternative equine measures to help her, I had no idea in which direction I should head. Should I go for chiropractic? Or would massage be better? What was the general opinion about the effectiveness of equine acupuncture? And how do you know which practitioners truly produce results?

Add to all those questions the fact that, with kids in college, I didn't want to fork over an endless stream of cash to make my horse better.

So I did the smart thing: 1) I went to Bay Area Equestrian Network, the fabulous horse resource for Northern California, where I live. There I researched names under alternative therapies. 2) I called my vet to see if they had ever heard of someone I found right in my own backyard.

"Yes," said my vet. "April Battles is the real deal."

So, by God's good graces, I had found April Battles, an equine body worker who combines the best of all worlds--a little chiropractic theory, a little acupressure theory, a little qi (pronounced "chi") theory, a little massage theory, and a lot of intuivtive spirit.

Best of all, during my initial phone conversation with April, she didn't tell me it was going to cost an armload of money to make Scarlett feel better.

"I charge $80 for an hour," explained April, who has helped horses across the nation and in Canada. "And when I leave, you're going to know how to do what I do so you can continue the work and continue helping your horse heal."

Say what? She wasn't going to tell me that she was the only one who could work on Scarlett? It wasn't going to cost me my first-born's college tuition?

In the time between our phone call and our actual appointment, April asked me to go to her YouTube channel, Holistic Horse Works. There, she has a video showing her evaluating a horse. This allowed me to see how she works.

Even better, she has posted there--FOR FREE--a short video demonstrating moves you can do with your horse to improve mobility, flexibility, balance, and overall comfort.

This "Yoga for Horses" video is just a few minutes long. And it has truly changed Scarlett's outlook on life.

It has now been exactly one week since April Battles first brought her equine body work methods to my little mare. In one week, the changes in Scarlett have been numerous and, wuite frankly, amazing.

--Before April's visit, Scarlett could never stand with all four feet square (an indication, April says, that the horse is out of alignment and probably is in pain, or at least discomfort).

Now Scarlett stands square almost all the time, on her on and when I'm on her.

--Before, saddling meant a glaring contest in which Scarlett stared at me with ears laid flat, waiting for an opportunity to bite me. Her tail would switch back and forth, and the back leg would threaten to kick out. It was truly scary and made me seriously consider selling her for any price. Fifty cents anyone?

Now, I put the saddle on and it is 180 degrees from what I was dealing with before. No tail switching, no threat of biting, no threat of getting kicked. As far as cinching her up, she doesn't even notice. I will admit that she is still a little touchy about taking the saddle off, but this just tells me I have more work to do. but the progress is amazing.

--Before April (and this is the most telling sign that something physical was up with the little mare), Scarlett could not take the left lead. For anything.

Now, left lead is taken easily and cheerfully so! An added bonus is that her overall canter feels much smoother and more balanced.

--Before April, Scarlett's coat was dull and very thick, a fact I attributed to winter. Yesterday, I was astounded to notice that Scarlett's coat has a gleam to it, so much so that she looked like she was basking in the warmth of June, rather than the chilly winds of November. Obviously, what is happening with her in terms of the muculoskeletal aspects is affecting not just her insides, but also her outsides. It's just so evident.

I am now using daily yoga on all four of our horses. I am a firm convert. What I love most is that April (unlike the chiropractor who recently worked on me) did not tell me I had to have her back right away. She didn't tell me I had to have Scarlett seen four times in four days. Quite the opposite, she left me feeling like I could do all this for my horse on my own.

If you want to give a great Christmas gift to the horse person in your life (or the horse) I am recommending everyone buy April's one-hour DVD, "Your Horses are Talking--Are You Listening?"

This DVD shows you how to work on your horse yourself, using simple exercises and Myofascial releases. I wish I knew of her expertise a long time ago, my horses would have been a lot happier and better off! I am so grateful for what April has done for my horses and myself, I can’t tell you how much I have learned.
It all started by seeing the free yoga video she has on You Tube, then after talking with her on the phone about my horses issues, I asked her to do a reading on both my 28 year old gelding, Sam and my 7 year old gelding, Malik.
Sam was my mom’s favorite horse before she passed away, and has been with us for many years and while he was showing signs of improvements he still had a ways to go. He was very slow in walking, it seemed as each step was painful for him, and he had soreness in his front legs, stocking up in both rear legs, had kidney issues and we just wanted him to feel better. April has a gift for listening, and it seems also in hearing what the horses have to say, and I had been looking for someone like her for a long time. I did as much as I could myself with herbs and homeopathies as the Vets said ‘’He is just old’’.
Then we invited April to Arizona to work on them. It is amazing what a horse does when they are able to move and how their attitude changes when they feel better. With April’s body work, some changes in his diet and supplements that April had recommended, he is now like the energizer bunny. He has got pep in his step…a lot of pep! When we used to turn him out with other horses they would pick on him and he could not get out of the way quickly, but he needed exercise. Now he likes being out with the other horses more because he can now move better. It is very apparent that he is happy! He is continually improving and it makes my heart melt. Today for the first time in many years my 28 year old horse was out in the arena and he was bucking and throwing his head, this is huge for Sam…I just wanted to cry. The “Thank You” goes to April!
Malik, my 8 year old, came to me with a huge toxic overload, (overhead fly spray system in show barn) he was completely shut down from his withers back, with very tight acidic muscles tender to the touch. He also needed cranial sacral work which has contributed to a lot of his symptoms, spooking, head tossing, agitated with hind end/sacrum being touched or worked with. He was very skittish and flighty and needed a lot of patience and love, all of which I was willing to give. After one session with April there was a huge difference in him. She continued with small sessions for the 5 days she was here and revealed to me a new and softer horse. A few diet changes, with a detox program she recommended to relieve his system of the toxic overload, and he is now able to be soft and pliable in his muscles and trusting more of others. More the horse I envisioned riding someday.
When you start listening to your horses, as shown in her DVD “Horses are talking are you listening’’ you have a new found relationship with them, April couldn’t have been more right about that statement! I love watching her DVD and learning more about how my horse should be able to move. Also the time she spent with me, showing me how to keep my horse going, is absolutely invaluable, she is worth more than she could ever charge but she does it for the love of the horse. We are on a continuous journey and April will always be a MASIVE part of our lives.
I will have her here as much as I can and I will always ask her advice with my horses, they need her and so do I. We continue to do our “horse yoga” which I had no idea was so important. When you see it firsthand it all becomes very real. Release the soft tissue traumas. Release emotional traumas. Remove defensive habits. Correct nutritional imbalances. Balance the energetic system. Go forward in health.

What April Battles brings to the overall health of horses is far more than a sum of the parts. April invites the horse’s body, heart and mind to regain innate health with a gifted blend of many modalities. Her continuing thirst for knowledge of anything beneficial to the horse has lead her through many different courses in

Deep Myofascial Releases, CranioSacral, Bio-Energy Therapy, Acupressure Meridian Balancing, Nutritional Therapy, Holistic Management, and she offers all this with understanding and love.

Thousands of people are now practicing various alternative therapies for horses, including these and others like chiropractic, acupuncture, Reiki and more. April is the only one I know of that has learned various modalities and blended them all for the benefit of the horse. Within each modality, though, the practice is only as good as the practitioner.

April Battles is a practitioner of remarkable talent and skill. She knows how to use her gifted ability to listen to the body, hear what treatment a horse is ready to receive, and apply her exceptional training with artistry and love.

Sometimes she just stands with her hands on the horse. Sometimes she’s picking up a shoulder or a rib cage. You’ll see her do stretches with a horse, massage…and she does these funny things with her fingers…

She applies a systematic approach to the horse’s body that blends the concepts of Chiropractic, Yoga, Bio-energy therapy, Massage, Reiki and intuitive listening.

Old injuries. New injuries. Behavioral problems (which are very often due to pain). Emotional traumas…April can address them all, giving the whole horse a beautiful opportunity to truly heal.

The whole goal is to put the horse’s body in a position where it can efficiently heal itself. There are skeletal elements, soft tissue elements, emotional elements, muscle memory elements, nutritional elements, toxicity elements… finding the balance takes more than good technique.

The most direct way to describe April’s practice is to say that she listens to the whole body, asks the horse what treatment should come first, knows how to hear the answer, and applies her techniques in whatever way is most appropriate at that time.

With just one treatment, April can gently treat the horse’s entire body, creating immediate and lasting adjustments that allow the horse’s overall comfort and wellness.

April will also teach you simple techniques that you can do to support your horse’s wellness in between visits.

Is April a Chiropractor?
No. But her treatments help realign the skeleton.

Is April a Veterinarian?
No. But her treatments immediately improve a horse’s overall health.

What horses will benefit from April’s treatment?
Any horse be it a dressage or sport horse, endurance horses, pleasure horse, show horse, rescued horse, pasture pets, minis, cart horses and more. Why you ask? Because the longevity of the horses usefulness will be increased immensely. Why are some horses arthritic and retired by age 15 when a little preventative bodywork would have kept them going till mid 20’s?

Does April have to come back multiple times?
Sometimes – just like people, horses are not always available to release their tension and imbalances in one fell-swoop. To assist a horse back to health may take support over time. Each horse is unique, and depending on what the horse is asked to do, the environment he lives in and the support he receives, it may be in the horse’s best interest to have regular visits from April. April has developed a simple plan to help the horse owner keep the horse’s body and energy in balance-what she calls her “horse yoga”
Which can be viewed for free at http://www.youtube.com/user/HolisticHorseWorks.

I brought Navarre to April’s ranch home just two days ago. He’s an 18 year old thoroughbred who spent the first half of his life as a hard-core eventer, campaigning as a breeding stallion. Gelded at age 9 and sold to people who just didn’t know any better, he never had support to help his body heal and recover from his hard working days and multiple injuries.

I was already aware of what Navarre needed, where his body was misaligned, that he wasn’t comfortable or happy in his body, and that his nutrition and energy were out of balance. I saw it, but I didn’t have what it takes to help him.

I wanted more than a chiropractor, because there was more going on than just skeletal problems. I wanted more than a massage therapist. Acupuncture would have helped, but only to a certain point. I knew a veterinarian wouldn’t have what Navarre needed to regain emotional and energetic balance. I could have combined all of these types of therapies, and over a long period of time, after spending a very large amount of money, Navarre would have been closer to health. But that still wasn’t enough.

April’s unique approach went straight to the source of Navarre’s various issues, and she very gently provided him with adjustments, physical and non-physical, that gave him immediate relief. His body relaxed visibly. As soon as he understood that April is here to take the pain away, he began offering to her, “Here…go to this part of my neck! Oh, yes, and go to my head now. And my hip wants to be adjusted, too!” His coat changed color within the afternoon, regaining his rich dark bay that had faded to a stressed reddish color from spending years in pain.

April’s treatment was clearly immediately effective, Navarre moved more comfortably, and I watched him relax right before my eyes. I could have paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars to inch Navarre closer and closer to relief…but the truth is, I don’t want to! April is more effective, more gentle, more efficient, and worth more than the money she receives.

My goal with Navarre is to enjoy each other on trails, on the beach, and wherever else life takes us. With his body out of pain, he can feel comfortable riding again, and we get to have the relationship we’ve both always wanted – a “little girl” and her horse, totally in love!

Kerri Lake

From DONNA SNYDER SMITH

Hot Off the Press and Straight >From the Horse's Mouth

I'm recommending TWO new DVDs: Regan Golob's "Health Talk for Horses (Ancient Wisdom Meets Common Sense Horsemanship) and April Battles "Horses Are Talking, Are You Listening? The DVD's are excellent instructional tools to help you with unmounted tools to keep your horses comfortable, and performing, not only at the peak of their athletic potential, but also happily. A previous equine bodyworker told me he was fine…something inside me told me he was not fine... now I know what is wrong with him and I can set about using energy work and Myofascial releases to correct it. I am impressed with what April does as it is a synergistic combination of a whole array of modalities, blended into about an hour and a half session that addresses all the issues your horse has, and does so effectively. In other words … it really works and you really see a difference right away. Using the horse yoga stretches daily after a corrective session, you can often keep your horse sound and happy all on your own. Check out her endurance horse in the video and how fit he is … WOW! He didn't start out that way; April was told he could not do endurance; but he’s now done over 2000 miles in 2 years, staying comfortable and sound. It is concise, thorough and very easy to follow. April's protocol and techniques are amazing and they make sense. BUT WHAT IS EVEN MORE AMAZING is by providing April with a picture of your horse, she will tell you what your horse needs. HONESTLY! I've never seen anything like it. April told me things about my horses that she could not possibly have known, unless I told her.
So after I got my horses' profiles and watched April's video, I had the confidence to go out and work with them. There isn't another DVD out there like this one. (I think I have them all!!!) And I don't think I've ever met anyone quite like April. She has an incredible gift. I live in Oregon and April asked me to let you know what I think about her CD. I found her while looking for a saddle for my horse, Jim. He is a 18 year old percheron/QH cross that I love to pieces who has had alot of sore body issues. Alot of them! This video IS AMAZING. Not only is there an HUGE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION, she teachs it in such a way that you can go out and do it and even if you don't get everything right away, you'll get enough so you see results immediately!!! I can't believe how much I have learned! I have watched the video at least 15 times. Each time, I "see and hear" more. The video teaches you how to check for sore points throughout the horse, how to release those trigger points, and then how to KEEP the horse corrected. I have never really endorsed anything for anyone, but this video is full of information that really really works. You will see results right away.

The biggest thing I learned was the first rib thing. IT IS AMAZING. It completely sets up healing for the rest of the body.

The second biggest thing I learned was that my horse's back end was completely compensating for his front end!! I had no idea!! I thought all his hind end soreness was from his hocks. I have freed up his shoulders and his ribs. He was so sore in his right arm pit that when I went to check his ribs on that side to help him release, he almost tried to bite me. HE has never tried to bite me before. The pain must have been really really intense. He warned me first, so it was good. It has taken a full week of the myo facial (spelling is probably wrong on that) to free up that spot and stop the pain. I I have found and am clearing up many many REAL SORE SPOTS I didn't know about in his chest, sides and neck which was making him short stride and guard on the front end. My horse actually looks different in the eyes from when I started. His body is freeing up, and you will actually see them look (in the eyes) different and carry themselves different. It is so good cuz I have struggled with vets and chiropractors for FOREVER, spent tons of money, and I haven't gotten the help from them that I got from this video. IT IS WORTH EVERY CENT. My friend who knows nothing about April was watching Jim, my horse play in the arena and she said "he sure looks different to me, what have you done with him lately? :)

The final thing that you can be sure about is April will answer all your questions and give you any and all help you need no questions asked. In fact, generally, behavior "problems" are pain related. Some pains can be handled with relative ease!

Many things that contribute to a horse's comfort or lack thereof include, but are not limited to, saddle fit, diet, living conditions, as well as regular routine and activity.

April has used, endorsed and been a distributor of treeless saddles for over eleven years and 39,000 miles! She currently sustains a treeless saddle business to support clients who have discovered that their horses move best and are more comfortable without a rigid tree on their backs. Please click here to visit April's treeless saddle website.

Additionally, April has discovered that some of the answers to the changes we see in our equine partners may be related to a build up of toxins in their bodies. April has found a product that has worked wonders--not just in her horses, but also in herself! Natural Cellular Defense is a supplement that goes into the body and toxic elements are naturally attracted to it so it effectively flushes the body of toxins that can keep the body from operating, healing, feeling its best.

When April consults with a potential client, she brings all of these components to her interactions. In this way, the client can avoid just throwing money at treating symptoms and can, instead, take care of the issues at their root.

WHAT IS IT THAT APRIL DOES?

April has combined various techniques, which are all gentle, non-invasive types of body therapy which are highly effective in working with chronic stress, injuries and pains or problems associated with postural and structural imbalances in your equine. April uses gentle movements and positions of the body to facilitate the change of stress and pain patterns. A strong focus is placed on the comfort of the individual equine, no forceful manipulations are used. April will also suggest home exercises that individuals can do to further facilitate the neuromuscular re-education process begun in the session. You will find this is very effective in helping alleviate both acute and chronic pain and stress patterns by reducing chronic muscle tension, soothing the joints, increasing flexibility, improving circulation, and relaxing the entire equine body, bringing it back into balance.

KELLY BIDLACK ANKEY

April knows what she's talking about!
And she will share it with you!

April, I thank you for your time and effort and my horses thank you!!!

Jan Harper
Volcano, Ca

BARB BLAKE'S TESTIMONIAL

My name is Barb Blake.
